Carbon Swapping Initiative

Carbon Swapping Initiative

The latest Green’ spin’ being sold to us is the concept of carbon offsetting - in simplified terms for your ‘carbon creating’ activity possibly a flight, car journey or coach trip and for domestic non renewable energy consumption you can ‘pay’ to clear your conscience. Obtain absolution, simply by paying money to some organization who will plant a tree in the back of beyond in some far flung part of the globe thousands of miles away in another country - in many instances nowhere near where you are. Is this really carbon offsetting?

This ‘offsetting’ is a great way for large organizations to continue their activities with a clear conscience, still making money but enabling them to claim the moral high ground and create a PR ‘green halo’ for their business in buying energy from a renewable energy company or paying some company somewhere to plant lots of trees over the horizon….. somewhere in some country thousands of miles away to theoretically soak up as much carbon or a portion of the carbon their activity generates…. Sounds really plausible doesn’t it!

Not everyone likes wind turbines as a source for generating renewable energy and unfortunately the very places wind turbines are erected happen to be the most beautiful locations around the U.K. Surely we don’t want to substitute one form of pollutant for a visual pollutant? The economics of commercial wind turbines is in our opinion debatable, read our webpage concerning the first U.K offshore wind farm at Blyth Northumberland.. it’s cringe worthy!

Going down the tree planting route? Doesn’t that mean for every additional tree planted we merely store up a greater problem for the next generation ? Isn’t that what we are supposed to be avoiding, leaving an orbiting dustbin for our children to live on?…Surely the more trees we plant the more trees will eventually die or be chopped up and burnt sometime in the future, our children’s future, releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Solution.. so we are lead to believe is for every tree that dies to plant another tree! How big are these forests going to get? Is there actually enough land for them all? Tree planting is just not going to solve the problem, look at the cumulative effect of carbon emissions and deforestation - great swathes of forest the size of countries are lost every year, to make any inroads we probably need to be planting thousands of trees for each person on the planet billions and billions each year.

Would it make more sense, rather than passing the problem and expense on to the ultimate consumer of energy, as is happening now and making it our problem for the oil companies, the coal producers, the utility companies to show blue sky thinking and help individuals and smaller companies through financially contributing towards Renewable Energy installations.

We are not responsible for the fuel in the plane, the airline is and the manufacturer of that fuel is. It is the process of ‘generating’ cleaner fuels and energy which needs to be addressed by them! We all know this will be challenging and very costly!

In the meantime surely there must be a better stop gap solution? Well we know there is! Wouldn’t it make better sense for those of us wishing to do their bit to be more proactive not reactive and to make a contribution which will enable individuals here in the U.K to install arguably the most efficient form of renewable energy generation there is to their homes namely evacuated solar hot water heating which uses the heat of the sun to generate hot water. Even on a cloudy day heat can be obtained from a collector, such technology works given the right conditions as far South as the South Pole and as far North as the North Pole.

For every installation that is made vast amounts of carbon emissions are saved you are actually making a real difference with your contribution. Bluntly we need your financial assistance, to help contribute towards the cost of this equipment. Even a small price reduction for a renewable energy system will lead to more systems being installed here in the U.K! Not in some far flung part of the globe but right here!
